Human rights<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Social work is based on respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all people as expressed in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), other related UN declarations and the European Convention on Human Rights and the conventions derived from those declarations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Principles<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Upholding and promoting human dignity and well-being<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social workers should respect, uphold and defend each person\u2019s physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual integrity and well- being. They should work towards promoting the best interests of individuals and groups in society and the avoidance of harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Respecting the right to self-determination<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social workers should respect, promote and support people\u2019s dignity and rights to make their own choices and decisions, irrespective of their values and life choices, provided this does not threaten the rights, safety and legitimate interests of others. Social workers ensure that any limitations on a person\u2019s rights are necessary and proportionate and are for a legitimate purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Promoting the right to participation<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social workers should promote the full involvement and participation of people using their services in ways that enable them to be empowered in all aspects of decisions and actions affecting their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Working holistically<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social workers should be concerned with the whole person, recognising the biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of people\u2019s lives.
